FENCE RULES – IBERVILLE (PARISH), LOUISIANA

OVERVIEW

Residential fences are permitted on private property within Iberville Parish, subject to local regulations.

This page applies to properties in the unincorporated areas of Iberville Parish; incorporated municipalities regulate fences under their own ordinances.

Fence rules for Iberville Parish are published primarily in Appendix B of the Iberville Parish Code of Ordinances, especially Article 3.A-5 Fences. Related visibility standards appear in Article 4.A-4 Road Design Standards, and related drainage and servitude constraints appear in Article 6.A-9 Drainage Servitude Required.

This page focuses on typical single-family residential fencing. If the jurisdiction’s adopted materials do not state a specific limit or requirement, this page notes that the code does not specify one.

Compiled From the Iberville Parish Code of Ordinances, Appendix B – Unified Development Code, the Iberville Parish Planning Commission page, and the Iberville Parish Permits & Inspections page, as of March 2026.

GOVERNANCE

The governing authority is the Iberville Parish Council. Residential fence rules in unincorporated Iberville Parish are controlled primarily by Appendix B – Unified Development Code within the Iberville Parish Code of Ordinances.

The Iberville Parish Planning Commission is the parish agency that provides land and development policies, interprets land use regulations, and reviews development and land use proposals for compliance with parish ordinances and the parish master plan.

The Iberville Parish Permits & Inspections Department handles parish permit applications and inspections. The department states that it issues new construction, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, demolition, solar panel, and mobile home permits.

Iberville Parish does publish a dedicated residential fence section. The core fence rules are in Article 3.A-5 Fences, with related visibility standards in Article 4.A-4.

PERMIT AND APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS

Building Permit: Iberville Parish publishes a general building permit section for construction and remodeling, but the official materials do not publish a fence-specific building permit trigger or a fence-height exemption.

Erosion Control: Installation of a fence is listed as an exempt activity from permits required under Chapter 6.C of the Unified Development Code.

Zoning Compliance: Building permit requirements are separate from zoning, setback, or plat requirements. Confirm any applicable zoning conditions, setbacks, and plat requirements with Iberville Parish Planning Commission before construction.

FENCE PLACEMENT RULES

Property Boundaries: The ordinance does not state a setback requirement for standard residential fences from property lines. Fence standards require fences to be erected within the owner’s property boundaries and placed wholly within those boundaries.

Yard Location Rules: The code does not specify separate front-yard, side-yard, or rear-yard placement limits for standard residential fences.

Drainage: No fence may be erected in a manner that inhibits or diverts natural drainage flow or causes blockage or damming of surface water.

Drainage Servitudes and Rights-of-Way: Along drainage channels, lots may not encroach on drainage servitudes or rights-of-way, and no building or other structure may be placed in a drainage servitude.

Utility Safety: Louisiana’s Underground Utilities and Facilities Damage Prevention Law requires the person responsible for excavation or demolition to provide notice to the regional notification center (Louisiana 811) before digging. Notice must be provided at least two (2) full business days before the proposed commencement date of the excavation or demolition. Markings are considered valid up to 20 calendar days from the “mark-by” time, as long as the marks remain visible.

FENCE HEIGHT AND VISIBILITY RULES

Maximum Height: The code does not specify a maximum height for standard residential fences.

Traffic Visibility: No part of any fence may be placed in a manner that visually obstructs vehicular or pedestrian traffic.

Corner Lots: At the intersection of two roads, fences must preserve clear vision within the sight distance triangle established by Article 4.A-4.

Under 30 mph: Minimum sight distance is 250 feet and minimum sight distance triangle is 30 feet.

30/35 mph: Minimum sight distance is 350 feet and minimum sight distance triangle is 40 feet.

40 mph: Minimum sight distance is 450 feet and minimum sight distance triangle is 50 feet.

45/50 mph: Minimum sight distance is 600 feet and minimum sight distance triangle is 50 feet.

MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION LIMITS

Materials: The code does not specify permitted or prohibited materials for standard single-family residential fences.

Opacity and Design: The code does not specify residential opacity, decorative style, or finish requirements for standard residential fences.

Condition: Fences must be maintained in a safe and substantial condition.

PRIVATE RESTRICTIONS

Homeowners’ association rules, subdivision covenants, servitudes, and other private deed restrictions operate independently of parish regulations and may be more restrictive than Iberville Parish rules.

REVIEW AND ENFORCEMENT CONTEXT

Fence issues are typically reviewed during permit or approval review when required, and through complaint-based code enforcement. Examples include:

Visibility Hazards: Fences that obstruct vehicular or pedestrian traffic, especially near intersections of two roads, conflict with the published fence standards.

Drainage Problems: Fences that block runoff, dam surface water, or interfere with drainage flow conflict with the published hazard and drainage provisions.

Servitude or Right-of-Way Encroachments: Structures may not be placed in drainage servitudes, and lots created along drainage channels may not encroach on drainage servitudes or rights-of-way.

Maintenance Conditions: Fences must be maintained in a safe and substantial condition.
