FENCE RULES – IBERIA (PARISH), LOUISIANA
OVERVIEW
Residential fences are permitted on private property within Iberia Parish, subject to local regulations.
This page applies to properties in the unincorporated areas of Iberia Parish; incorporated municipalities regulate fences under their own ordinances.
Fence rules in Iberia Parish are not collected in one stand-alone residential fence chapter. Relevant provisions appear in Chapter 105 (Buildings and Building Regulations), Chapter 110 (Subdivision Regulations), Chapter 115 (Zoning), and in the parish’s permit and planning materials. The parish publishes a corner-lot visibility rule for fences and related obstructions, but the parish code does not publish a stand-alone set of standard residential fence height and material rules.
This page focuses on typical single-family residential fencing. If the jurisdiction’s adopted materials do not state a specific limit or requirement, this page notes that the code does not specify one.
Compiled From the Code of Ordinances, Parish of Iberia, Louisiana, the Iberia Parish Permit Office page, the Planning & Zoning page, the General Information permit document, and the Residential Building Permit Application, as of March 2026.
GOVERNANCE
Iberia Parish Government operates under the Home Rule Charter, with the Iberia Parish Council serving as the legislative authority and the Code of Ordinances, Parish of Iberia, Louisiana serving as the principal ordinance source for parish regulations.
The code establishes the Planning, Zoning and Permitting Department to administer the parish’s building permit, subdivision, planning, and zoning regulations.
The parish’s official permit materials are published through the Iberia Parish Permit Office, and the parish’s zoning and subdivision administration materials are published through the Planning & Zoning Department.
Iberia Parish does not publish one consolidated residential fence code. Residential fence-related issues must instead be read across Chapter 105, Chapter 110, Chapter 115, and the parish’s permit and planning materials.
PERMIT AND APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS
• Building Permit: The Iberia Parish Permit Office states that permits must be obtained for most construction activity and that a permit is required before the start of any construction work. Chapter 105 separately states that no person may construct any structure without first obtaining a permit. The official materials reviewed for this page do not publish a fence-specific exemption.
• Zoning Compliance: Building permit requirements are separate from zoning, setback, or plat requirements. Confirm any applicable zoning conditions, setbacks, and plat requirements with Planning, Zoning and Permitting Department before construction.
FENCE PLACEMENT RULES
• Property Lines and Encroachments: The ordinance does not state a setback requirement for standard residential fences from property lines; however, fences must be located entirely on the owner’s property and must not encroach into rights-of-way or easements or servitudes.
• Site Constraints: The parish’s residential permit materials require applicants to identify easements, servitudes, and other encumbrances on the site plan and to account for site-specific restrictions that may affect construction.
• Flag Lots: In a platted flag lot, no building, structure, wall, or fence is permitted within the pole or staff portion of the lot.
• Utility Safety: Louisiana’s Underground Utilities and Facilities Damage Prevention Law requires the person responsible for excavation or demolition to provide notice to the regional notification center (Louisiana 811) before digging. Notice must be provided at least two (2) full business days before the proposed commencement date of the excavation or demolition. Markings are considered valid up to 20 calendar days from the “mark-by” time, as long as the marks remain visible.
FENCE HEIGHT AND VISIBILITY RULES
• Maximum Height: The parish code does not specify a maximum height for standard single-family residential fences.
• Yard-Based Height Limits: The parish code does not specify separate front-yard, side-yard, or rear-yard fence height limits for standard single-family residential lots.
• Corner Lot Visibility: On a corner lot, no fence, wall, hedge, other structure, or planting may be erected, placed, or maintained within the triangular area formed by the intersecting street lines and a straight line joining those street lines at points 20 feet from the point of intersection, measured along the street lines from the road surface.
MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION LIMITS
• Materials: The parish code does not specify permitted or prohibited materials for standard single-family residential fences.
• Construction Standards: The parish code does not specify opacity standards, finished-side requirements, or similar construction details for standard single-family residential fences.
PRIVATE RESTRICTIONS
Private covenants, deed restrictions, and homeowners association rules operate independently of parish regulations and may be more restrictive than Iberia Parish requirements.
REVIEW AND ENFORCEMENT CONTEXT
Fence issues are typically reviewed during permit or approval review when required, and through complaint-based code enforcement. Examples include:
• Permit Review: Permit materials state that permits must be obtained for most construction activity, and Chapter 105 requires a permit before constructing a structure.
• Zoning Administration: The Planning, Zoning and Permitting Department administers zoning, subdivision, and related permit functions. The zoning ordinance also authorizes issuance of certificates of zoning compliance in connection with building permit review where applicable.
• Visibility Conflicts: A fence placed within the published 20-foot corner-lot visibility triangle can create a direct code issue.
• Site Constraint Conflicts: Easements, servitudes, rights-of-way, and plat conditions can become review issues because parish permit materials require those constraints to be identified and accounted for.
• Zoning Violations During Construction: When a zoning violation is found during construction, the zoning ordinance authorizes a stop work order to be posted on the premises.
