FENCE RULES – GONZALES (CITY), LOUISIANA
OVERVIEW
Residential fences are permitted on private property within City of Gonzales, subject to local regulations.
The City of Gonzales does not publish a single consolidated residential fence chapter. The operative standards appear primarily in Chapter 22, Zoning, especially § 22-4(f)(3) Screening and § 22-5.5(d)(13) Clear sight distance, with permit authority appearing in Chapter 5, Secs. 5-22 through 5-24 of the Code of Ordinances.
This page focuses on typical single-family residential fencing. If the jurisdiction’s adopted materials do not state a specific limit or requirement, this page notes that the code does not specify one.
Compiled From the City of Gonzales Code of Ordinances, the Planning and Development page, the Permits and Licensing page, and the 2025 Fee Schedule as of March 2026.
GOVERNANCE
Residential fence administration in the City of Gonzales is split between the Planning and Development Department for planning and zoning matters and Permits and Licensing for permit-facing administration and fee schedules.
The Planning and Development page directs Planning & Zoning questions to South Central Planning and Development Commission, a third-party group contracted by the City of Gonzales to work on planning and zoning matters.
The City of Gonzales does not publish a consolidated fence code. Standard residential fence rules appear primarily in Chapter 22, Zoning, while permit authority appears in Chapter 5 building-permit provisions.
PERMIT AND APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS
• Building Permit: A Building Permit is required before a fence is built, enlarged, or altered.
• Application Basis: Section 5-22 states that a plan of the proposed work and a statement of the materials to be used must be submitted to the building official for the proposed construction.
• No Published Height Exemption: The City of Gonzales materials reviewed for this page do not publish a fence-height threshold below which the permit requirement is waived.
• Owner Construction: A bona fide property owner may construct a fence on the owner’s property if the actual construction is performed by the owner or under the owner’s direct supervision.
• Zoning Compliance: Building permit requirements are separate from zoning, setback, or plat requirements. Confirm any applicable zoning conditions, setbacks, and plat requirements with Planning and Development Department before construction.
FENCE PLACEMENT RULES
• Setbacks: The ordinance does not state a setback requirement for standard residential fences from property lines. The zoning code allows fences and walls under the screening provision to extend into required setbacks.
• Easements: The general encroachment rule states that allowed encroachments may not extend into easements that prohibit such encroachments.
• Utility Safety: Louisiana’s Underground Utilities and Facilities Damage Prevention Law requires the person responsible for excavation or demolition to provide notice to the regional notification center (Louisiana 811) before digging. Notice must be provided at least two (2) full business days before the proposed commencement date of the excavation or demolition. Markings are considered valid up to 20 calendar days from the “mark-by” time, as long as the marks remain visible.
FENCE HEIGHT AND VISIBILITY RULES
• General Height Limit: The municipal code does not specify a general maximum height for standard residential fences.
• Front Yards: Fences located in front yards may not be higher than four (4) feet in height unless they are constructed to permit fifty (50) percent visibility into the yard or are required for screening.
• Clear Sight Areas: In an identified clear sight area at a street intersection or a driveway and street intersection, it is unlawful to construct or allow to remain any fence, sign, movable object, hedge, shrub, or other plants that exceed thirty-six (36) inches in height and obstruct that area.
MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION LIMITS
• Standard Materials: Fences and walls, other than those required for screening, shall be constructed of wood, decorative metal, or masonry.
• Concrete Block Restriction: The masonry allowance does not include unfinished or painted concrete block.
• Wood Fence Construction: The structural support members of wooden perimeter fences must be located on the interior of the fence and must not be visible from adjacent properties.
• Additional Material Standards: The municipal code does not specify additional prohibited materials for standard residential fences beyond the material limits stated above.
PRIVATE RESTRICTIONS
Homeowners association covenants, subdivision restrictions, and other private agreements operate independently of City of Gonzales regulations and may be more restrictive than the city’s published fence standards.
REVIEW AND ENFORCEMENT CONTEXT
Fence issues are typically reviewed during permit or approval review when required, and through complaint-based code enforcement. Examples include:
• Permit Compliance: Building, enlarging, or altering a fence without the required permit.
• Submittal Compliance: Failing to submit the required plan and materials statement for proposed fence work.
• Front-Yard Height Compliance: Installing a front-yard fence taller than four (4) feet without the required fifty (50) percent visibility condition or a screening basis.
• Sight Obstructions: Creating an obstruction in an identified clear sight area with a fence or related object exceeding thirty-six (36) inches in height.
• Easement Encroachments: Placing a fence where an easement prohibits the encroachment.
• Construction Standards: Installing a wooden perimeter fence with support members exposed toward adjacent properties or using unfinished or painted concrete block where the zoning code does not allow it.
