FENCE RULES – EAST FELICIANA (PARISH), LOUISIANA

OVERVIEW

Residential fences are permitted on private property within East Feliciana Parish, subject to local regulations.

This page applies to properties in the unincorporated areas of East Feliciana Parish; incorporated municipalities regulate fences under their own ordinances.

East Feliciana Parish does not publish a consolidated residential fence chapter in the materials reviewed for this page. Fence-related rules appear instead in the general permit provisions of Chapter 3B, in the subdivision rules for private access servitudes in Appendix A, and in general drainage and right-of-way provisions.

This page focuses on typical single-family residential fencing. If the jurisdiction’s adopted materials do not state a specific limit or requirement, this page notes that the code does not specify one.

Compiled From the East Feliciana Parish Code of Ordinances, Inspections and Permits, Residential Construction, Roads and Bridges, and Planning and Zoning as of March 2026.

GOVERNANCE

The governing authority is the East Feliciana Parish Police Jury. Construction permits in the unincorporated parish are administered through the Building Department and the parish building official.

Zoning and subdivision matters are administered through Planning and Zoning and the Planning and Zoning Commission of East Feliciana Parish.

East Feliciana Parish does not publish a dedicated residential fence ordinance in the materials reviewed for this page. The principal fence-related provisions for unincorporated residential property appear in Chapter 3B, Article II, Codes and Permits, and in Appendix A, Sec. X for private access servitudes.

PERMIT AND APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS

Building Permit: East Feliciana Parish publishes a general permit requirement for construction work involving a building or structure through the parish building official. The official materials reviewed for this page do not publish a fence-specific permit threshold or a fence-specific exemption.

Zoning Compliance: Building permit requirements are separate from zoning, setback, or plat requirements. Confirm any applicable zoning conditions, setbacks, and plat requirements with Planning and Zoning before construction.

FENCE PLACEMENT RULES

Property Lines: The ordinance does not state a setback requirement for standard residential fences from property lines; however, fences must be located entirely on the owner’s property and must not encroach into rights-of-way or easements or servitudes.

Private Access Servitudes: Where a private driveway servitude has been created by plat, no building, fence, structure, or improvement may be constructed or installed within or over that servitude so as to prevent or unreasonably interfere with the purpose for which the servitude was granted.

Drainage: The parish code prohibits obstruction of the passive flow of water in streets, gutters, ditches, drains, or servitude right-of-way under public control.

Utility Safety: Louisiana’s Underground Utilities and Facilities Damage Prevention Law requires the person responsible for excavation or demolition to provide notice to the regional notification center (Louisiana 811) before digging. Notice must be provided at least two (2) full business days before the proposed commencement date of the excavation or demolition. Markings are considered valid up to 20 calendar days from the “mark-by” time, as long as the marks remain visible.

FENCE HEIGHT AND VISIBILITY RULES

Maximum Height: The parish code does not specify a maximum height for standard residential fences.

Yard-Based Height Limits: The parish code does not publish separate front-yard, side-yard, or rear-yard height limits for standard residential fences.

Visibility: The parish materials reviewed for this page do not publish a residential fence sight-triangle or fence-visibility standard.

MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION LIMITS

Materials: The parish code does not specify permitted or prohibited materials for standard residential fences.

Construction Standards: The parish materials reviewed for this page do not publish residential fence opacity rules, gate-width rules, finish-side rules, or similar construction standards for standard residential fences.

PRIVATE RESTRICTIONS

Homeowners association covenants, subdivision restrictions, and other private agreements operate independently of East Feliciana Parish regulations and may be more restrictive than the parish’s published standards.

REVIEW AND ENFORCEMENT CONTEXT

Fence issues are typically reviewed during permit or approval review when required, and through complaint-based code enforcement. Examples include:

Permit Review: Work submitted through the parish construction-permit process administered by the Building Department.

Servitude Encroachments: Fences or other improvements placed within or over a private driveway servitude so as to prevent or unreasonably interfere with access.

Drainage Obstructions: Conditions that impede the passive flow of water in streets, gutters, ditches, drains, or servitude right-of-way under public control.

Zoning or Plat Compliance: Lot-division, access-servitude, or related zoning and subdivision questions administered through Planning and Zoning or the Planning and Zoning Commission of East Feliciana Parish.
