FENCE RULES – ACADIA (PARISH), LOUISIANA

OVERVIEW

Residential fences are permitted on private property within Acadia Parish, subject to local regulations.

This page applies to properties in the unincorporated areas of Acadia Parish; incorporated municipalities regulate fences under their own ordinances.

Acadia Parish does not publish a single consolidated residential fence chapter. The published rules most relevant to a standard homeowner fence project appear in the Code of Ordinances, Acadia Parish Police Jury, especially Chapter 5, Article IV, Building Codes and Permits, and in Appendix B, Section H, Visibility at Intersections, together with the parish’s public Building Permits guidance.

This page focuses on typical single-family residential fencing. If the jurisdiction’s adopted materials do not state a specific limit or requirement, this page notes that the code does not specify one.

Compiled From the Code of Ordinances, Acadia Parish Police Jury, the parish Building Permits page and linked residential permit materials, and Acadia Parish Planning Commission materials as of March 2026.

GOVERNANCE

The governing authority for unincorporated Acadia Parish is the Acadia Parish Police Jury. Building-code administration and permit enforcement are assigned to the Acadia Parish Building Official under Chapter 5 of the parish code.

Planning and subdivision administration appears through the Acadia Parish Planning Commission. The parish code does not publish a consolidated residential fence ordinance; instead, fence-related rules appear through general permit provisions and visibility standards.

For this topic, the principal published sources are Chapter 5, Article IV, Building Codes and Permits, and Appendix B, Section H, Visibility at Intersections.

PERMIT AND APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS

Building Permit: The parish’s published Building Permits guidance states that, in the unincorporated parish, projects involving construction, moving, replacing, remodeling, demolition, or adding any type of structure require a permit through the parish permit office. The same published guidance states that no permit is required when the project is less than 200 square feet.

Zoning Compliance: Building permit requirements are separate from zoning, setback, or plat requirements. Confirm any applicable zoning conditions, setbacks, and plat requirements with Acadia Parish Planning Commission before construction.

FENCE PLACEMENT RULES

Property Lines: The ordinance does not state a setback requirement for standard residential fences from property lines; however, fences must be located entirely on the owner’s property and must not encroach into rights-of-way or easements or servitudes.

Intersection Visibility: No fence, wall, hedge, shrub planting, or structure may be erected or maintained in a manner that interferes with traffic visibility across the corner of a lot. Within the triangular area formed by the street property lines and a line connecting points 25 feet from the intersection of the street lines, visibility may not be obstructed between 3 feet and 8 feet above the established grade.

Driveways and Alleys: No fence, wall, hedge, or shrub planting may be placed or maintained within the triangular area formed by the street property line and a line extending 10 feet from the corner of a driveway or alley along the street property line where visibility would be obstructed between 3 feet and 8 feet above the established grade.

Flood Hazard Areas: For lots in mapped special flood hazard areas, site development remains subject to the parish floodplain ordinance. In an adopted regulatory floodway, encroachments, including fill and other development, are prohibited unless the ordinance standard is satisfied.

Utility Safety: Louisiana’s Underground Utilities and Facilities Damage Prevention Law requires the person responsible for excavation or demolition to provide notice to the regional notification center (Louisiana 811) before digging. Notice must be provided at least two (2) full business days before the proposed commencement date of the excavation or demolition. Markings are considered valid up to 20 calendar days from the “mark-by” time, as long as the marks remain visible.

FENCE HEIGHT AND VISIBILITY RULES

Maximum Height: The parish code does not specify a maximum height for standard residential fences.

Yard-Based Height Limits: The parish code does not specify separate front-yard, side-yard, or rear-yard fence height limits for standard residential fencing.

Visibility: Visibility limits do apply at street intersections and at driveway or alley approaches. In those areas, fences and similar obstructions must comply with the published sight-clearance triangles and the 3-foot to 8-foot visibility zone.

MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION LIMITS

Materials: The parish code does not specify permitted or prohibited materials for standard single-family residential fences.

Opacity: The parish code does not specify a residential fence opacity standard.

Construction Standards: The parish code does not publish fence-specific construction standards for standard single-family residential fences.

PRIVATE RESTRICTIONS

Private restrictions such as subdivision covenants, deed restrictions, and homeowners association rules operate independently of parish regulations and may be more restrictive than the parish code.

REVIEW AND ENFORCEMENT CONTEXT

Fence issues are typically reviewed during permit or approval review when required, and through complaint-based code enforcement. Examples include:

Visibility Conflicts: Fences, walls, hedges, or similar obstructions that interfere with required visibility at street corners, driveways, or alleys.

Floodplain Review: Site development in mapped special flood hazard areas and adopted regulatory floodways.
